After collection, an old cordless vacuum battery can be sorted and processed to recover materials for other products. Recycling does not mean recharging the pack and putting it straight into another vacuum. The battery and the rest of the machine also need different decisions: an exhausted pack does not, by itself, tell you whether the whole vacuum should be discarded.
That distinction matters when you are clearing a cupboard, replacing a battery or deciding what to do with a Dyson that no longer runs.
What happens beyond the battery drop-off point?
B-cycle's published recycling journey describes collection, sorting by chemistry and condition, then processing to separate useful materials. It is a general description of the scheme, not a trace of any particular Dusti customer's battery.
- Collection and transport: accepted batteries travel to an accredited recycling facility.
- Sorting: batteries are assessed for their chemistry and damage, which affects handling.
- Processing: shredding and separation produce material streams, including metals and a powder called black mass.
- Further recovery: refining can recover valuable materials for use in new products. The route depends on battery chemistry and processing.
What is “black mass”?
It is a mixture of recovered battery materials, not a new battery. B-cycle explains that lithium battery black mass can contain valuable substances such as lithium, cobalt, nickel and manganese. Its current journey describes overseas refining of lithium black mass. Recycling therefore involves several stages; dropping off a pack is the beginning.
Can I put the battery in my household recycling bin?
No. EPA Victoria's e-waste guidance says batteries and other e-waste do not belong in ordinary household rubbish or recycling bins. Incorrect disposal of lithium-ion batteries can cause fires. Use a collection service that specifically accepts the battery or appliance.
Does a battery collection point take the whole vacuum?
Do not assume so. B-cycle's accepted battery categories include rechargeable and easily removable batteries, but that is not blanket approval to leave a complete vacuum at every battery bin. Confirm the collection point accepts your pack, its condition and whether it must be separate from the appliance. For the complete machine, ask your council about e-waste collection.
If you are unsure how your model's battery is removed, consult the manufacturer's instructions or ask for help. Do not open the battery pack to extract individual cells: Dyson's Australian V10 manual explicitly warns against disassembling the battery. Follow the instructions for your own model.
What should I check before taking it anywhere?
- Acceptance: ask about your particular battery or whole vacuum before travelling.
- Condition: tell the collection service about visible damage or leakage; do not assume a normal collection bin is suitable.
- Preparation: follow the receiver's instructions. B-cycle's safety guidance includes covering used battery terminals with clear sticky tape and keeping batteries cool, dry and away from metal objects and children. Damaged batteries need a different route through a council depot or transfer station; confirm arrangements first.
Should I recycle the battery or replace the entire vacuum?
Start with the question you actually need answered: what is wrong with the machine? Short runtime or failure to turn on is a symptom, not a confirmed diagnosis. Ask about assessment before buying parts or disposing of the vacuum.
For a Dyson, send Dusti your model, symptoms and postcode. If you are finished with the machine, Dusti's current service page invites enquiries about whether an old Dyson can be refurbished or used for parts. Ask about collection or postage before sending it. This does not establish that Dusti is a B-cycle collection point or battery reprocessor.
If assessment is the next step, Dusti's service is A$95. Optional Melbourne pickup and return adds A$30 within the service area, making A$125 total. Parts and fault-specific repairs may cost extra. Those are servicing prices, not a battery disposal fee or an all-inclusive repair quote.
Replacing the machine? You can also browse Dusti's refurbished Dyson listings and ask about current availability, condition and accessories.
