Short answer: new Dyson vacuums bought in Australia come with a 2-year Dyson guarantee covering parts and labour, and refurbished machines bought from Dyson get 1 year. Separately, the Australian Consumer Law gives you automatic rights against the business that sold it, and those rights can last beyond the 2 years if a fault turns up sooner than is reasonable for what you paid.

Two different sets of rights
Most people use “warranty” for both, but they are separate things with different rules and different people to contact.
- The Dyson guarantee is a voluntary promise from Dyson. Dyson sets the terms and handles the claim.
- The consumer guarantees come from the Australian Consumer Law (ACL). They apply automatically, nobody can sign them away, and your claim is with the business that sold you the vacuum.
Dyson says so itself: its guarantee is “in addition to the consumer guarantee under the Australian Consumer Law”, and the guarantee expiring “does not affect any consumer guarantee rights you may have”.
What the Dyson guarantee covers
- Length: 2 years for new Dyson vacuum cleaners, 1 year for refurbished machines bought from Dyson.
- What you get: repair or replacement of the machine, at Dyson’s discretion, including parts and labour.
- Registration: optional. Dyson lets you register online, by post or by phone, but doesn’t say you must.
- Not covered: accidental damage, misuse, blockages, non-genuine Dyson parts or accessories, and repairs or alterations by anyone other than Dyson or its authorised agents.
Dyson’s guarantee FAQ gives the 2-year term for new vacuums and doesn’t list a separate period for batteries. If a battery fails early because of a defect, raise it with Dyson as a guarantee claim. All rechargeable batteries also lose runtime gradually as they age, and a slow decline over years is a different situation from a sudden early failure.
What the Australian Consumer Law adds
Under the ACL, products must be of acceptable quality for a reasonable time. There is no fixed number of years: the ACCC says it depends on the nature of the product and what you paid, and it can run past a manufacturer’s warranty.
- Minor problem: the business must repair it free of charge. If it can’t or won’t do that within a reasonable time, you can have it fixed elsewhere and be reimbursed, or ask for a refund or replacement.
- Major problem: you choose a refund or a replacement (or a repair, if you prefer). The ACCC treats a problem as major if the product is unsafe, is very different from its description, has a problem serious enough that someone wouldn’t have bought it, or can’t do its normal job and can’t easily be fixed in a reasonable time.
- Not covered: damage you caused by misusing it, problems you knew about before buying, and change of mind.
Who to contact
For a Dyson guarantee claim, contact Dyson. For a consumer guarantee claim, go to the business that sold you the vacuum. The ACCC is clear that the seller, not the manufacturer, is responsible for the remedy, and that a business can’t refuse to help by telling you to contact the manufacturer.
Put your claim in writing. Include what went wrong, when you bought it, what you’ve already tried, the outcome you want, and a copy of your receipt. If the business won’t help, contact Consumer Affairs Victoria (or the agency in your state).
Before you get it repaired
If your Dyson is still inside its guarantee, start with Dyson or the retailer. Dyson’s terms exclude repairs by anyone other than Dyson or its authorised agents, and Dusti is an independent repairer, so having us (or any independent shop) work on it while it’s covered would take that repair outside Dyson’s guarantee. Don’t open the machine or fit non-genuine parts before making a claim either.
Independent repair makes sense when the guarantee has ended, the claim has been declined, or the problem is outside what either set of rights covers, such as accidental damage, a blockage, or a battery that has simply worn down over the years.
When your Dyson is out of warranty
That’s where we come in. A Dusti service is $95. Within 15 km of the Melbourne CBD we’ll pick it up and drop it back for $125 all up, and you can post it to us from anywhere in Australia. Replacement parts, such as a battery, are quoted separately before any work goes ahead.
