Short answer: a Miele that smells when you use it usually has a full or old bag, dirty filters, or something organic rotting in the hose or floorhead. Replace the bag, clean or replace the filters, and check the hose and head for trapped debris. A burning smell is different: stop using the vacuum, unplug it, and have it checked.

What causes the smell

A full or old dust bag

This is the most common cause. Fine dust, pet hair and food crumbs sitting in the bag start to smell, and warm exhaust air carries it into the room. Bags can smell well before they are full, especially in homes with pets.

Dirty filters

Miele cylinder vacuums have a motor protection filter (often in the bag compartment) and an exhaust filter (often a HEPA or AirClean filter). When they are clogged, odours are trapped and pushed back out. Your manual lists which filters your model has and how often to change them.

Pet hair and organic debris

Hair wrapped around the brush roll, and bits of food or dander caught in the floorhead or hose, slowly decompose and smell.

Moisture

Vacuuming damp carpet, spills or wet debris can leave moisture inside, which leads to mould and a musty smell. Standard Miele vacuums are not designed to pick up liquids.

Overheating or electrical faults

A burning or electrical smell can mean blocked airflow is making the motor overheat, a jammed brush roll, or a motor or wiring fault. Stop using it straight away.

How to fix a smelly Miele, step by step

  1. Unplug the vacuum.
  2. Replace the dust bag with the correct type for your model, even if it isn’t completely full.
  3. Check the filters. Replace the motor protection filter when you change bags if your model uses one, and replace or clean the exhaust filter according to your manual.

  5. Check the hose and wand for blockages and trapped debris.
  6. Let everything dry completely if anything was damp before you reassemble it.

Avoid spraying perfume or chemicals into the vacuum, as they can damage seals and filters and only mask the smell.

  • Change bags regularly, more often with pets.
  • Replace filters on the schedule in your manual.
  • Clear hair from the brush roll every few weeks.
  • Never vacuum liquids, damp carpet or wet food.
