Dyson head not spinning? Here’s what to check.

If the brush bar has stopped, or spins then stops, it’s usually hair wrap or a dirty connection. Here’s how to tell, and when it’s a repair.

Why the brush bar stops.

Most likely first. Tap a part on the drawing to jump to it.

Hair and thread wrapped around the bar

Hair winds tightly around the brush bar and into the end bearing until the bar can’t turn freely.

Check: Take the brush bar out and cut the hair away, including at the ends.

Something jammed in the head

A sock, cable tie or hard debris can stall the bar. The head stops to protect its motor.

Check: Look inside the head opening and around the bar for anything caught.

Dirty or damaged contacts

The head gets its power through small metal contacts where it clicks into the wand. Dust or a bent contact cuts power to the bar.

Check: Wipe the contacts on the head, the wand and the machine, then try the head directly on the machine.

A worn motor or bearings in the head

If it’s clean and still won’t spin, or only turns when you push it along, the head’s motor or bearings have usually worn out.

Check: Nothing more at home. We test the head and quote the repair or a replacement before fitting.

Try this at home first.

Switch it off and take the battery off, or unplug the charger, before you open anything up.

Dyson head questions.

Why is my Dyson head not spinning when there’s no blockage?

Check the contacts where the head meets the wand, and try the head directly on the machine. If it spins there, the wand is the problem. If it still won’t spin, the head’s motor or bearings usually need repair.

Can I keep using my Dyson if the brush bar won’t spin?

It will still pick up on hard floors, but carpets won’t clean properly, and a jammed bar can strain the head motor. Clear it before you keep using it.

How do I take the brush bar out?

Switch it off and remove the head. On most Dyson cordless heads you undo the end cap with a coin and slide the bar out.

Is the problem the head or the wand?

Try the head straight on the machine, without the wand. If it spins, the wand’s wiring or contacts are at fault. If it doesn’t, it’s the head.

How much does it cost to fix?

Our $95 service includes finding the fault. If the head needs parts or replacing, we quote that before we fit anything. How pricing works.
