Dyson pulsing on and off? Start here.

Pulsing is your Dyson protecting its motor when airflow is restricted. It’s usually a blockage you can clear yourself. If not, it’s often the battery or the trigger.

Tap a part

Why it pulses or cuts out.

Most likely first. Tap a part on the drawing to jump to it.

A blockage somewhere in the airflow

When air can’t flow freely, the motor speeds up and slows down to protect itself. That’s the pulsing.

Check: Check the bin, the wand, the head neck and the head inlet.

A dirty or damp filter

A clogged filter restricts airflow just like a blockage does.

Check: Wash the filter in cold water and let it dry for at least 24 hours.

A worn battery

If it pulses or cuts out near the end of a charge, or only on boost, the battery may no longer hold its voltage under load.

Check: Charge it fully and test on the lowest setting. Try the runtime check.

A trigger or connection fault

A worn trigger or a loose battery connection can cut the power in and out, often when you move or tilt it.

Check: Check the battery is fully seated. If it cuts out when you change grip, it needs a service.

Try this at home first.

Switch it off and take the battery off, or unplug the charger, before you open anything up.

Dyson pulsing questions.

Why does my Dyson keep pulsing on and off?

It’s designed to pulse when airflow is restricted, to protect the motor. Check the bin, filter, wand and head for a blockage first.

Is pulsing a battery problem?

Usually not. Most pulsing comes from a blockage. If it only happens near the end of a charge or on boost, a worn battery is more likely.

Why does my Dyson cut out when I move it?

That usually points to a worn trigger or a loose battery connection rather than a blockage. Check the battery is seated, then book a service.

Can I keep using a Dyson that pulses?

Clear any blockage first. Running it with a blockage strains the motor and can make the fault worse.
