Dyson losing suction? Let’s get it back.

Weak suction is nearly always an airflow problem: a dirty filter, a packed cyclone or something stuck. Work through these checks, then hand it to us if it’s still weak.

Why suction drops.

Most likely first. Tap a part on the drawing to jump to it.

A dirty or damp filter

A clogged filter chokes the airflow. So does a filter that went back in before it was fully dry.

Check: Rinse the filter in cold water, with no detergent, and let it dry for at least 24 hours.

A blockage in the wand or head

Hair, fluff and small objects collect at the bends: the head neck, the wand and the bin inlet.

Check: Take the wand off and look through it, then check the head neck and the bin inlet.

A packed cyclone or bin

Fine dust coats the mesh shroud inside the bin and slows the airflow, even when the bin looks empty.

Check: Empty the bin and wipe the mesh shroud with a dry cloth or brush.

Worn seals or a motor fault

If it’s clean and clear and still weak, a worn seal, a cracked part or a motor fault is letting air in or reducing power.

Check: Nothing more at home. We test it and quote any parts before fitting.

Try this at home first.

Switch it off and take the battery off, or unplug the charger, before you open anything up.

Dyson suction questions.

Why has my Dyson lost suction with no blockage?

Check the filter first, then the mesh shroud inside the bin. If both are clean and it’s still weak, a worn seal, a crack or a motor fault is likely, and it needs a service.

How often should I wash my Dyson filter?

Dyson recommends washing it at least once a month. Always let it dry fully, for at least 24 hours, before you put it back.

Will a new filter fix weak suction?

Only if the filter is the problem. An old filter that won’t come clean can restrict airflow, but a blockage or seal problem won’t be fixed by a new one.

Can a worn battery cause weak suction?

Not usually. A worn battery shortens runtime or makes it cut out. Weak suction on a full charge points to airflow.

Is it worth servicing a Dyson that has lost suction?

Usually, yes. Our $95 service includes a full clean and finding the fault, and we quote any parts before fitting. How pricing works.
