Dyson won’t turn on? Let’s narrow it down.

No lights and no sound usually means power isn’t reaching the motor: a flat or worn battery, a battery that isn’t seated, or a trigger or button fault.

Why it won’t start.

Most likely first. Tap a part on the drawing to jump to it.

A flat or worn battery

A battery that has run completely flat, or is near the end of its life, may show no lights at all.

Check: Charge it for a few hours and check whether the charging light comes on.

A battery that isn’t seated

If the battery isn’t clicked fully into place, or the contacts are dirty, power can’t reach the motor.

Check: Remove the battery, clean the contacts and click it firmly back in.

A trigger or power button fault

The trigger and power button wear with use. If it charges but won’t run, the switch is often the cause.

Check: Press the trigger or power button firmly, once. If nothing happens on a full charge, book a service.

A motor or electronics fault

If the lights come on but the motor doesn’t run, or you only hear a click, the motor or its electronics may have failed.

Check: Nothing more at home. We test it and quote any parts before fitting.

Try this at home first.

Switch it off and take the battery off, or unplug the charger, before you open anything up.

Dyson power questions.

Why won’t my Dyson turn on after charging?

If there are no lights after a full charge, the battery may be worn or not seated, or the charger may not be working. If the lights come on but it won’t run, it’s usually the trigger, the power button or the motor.

My Dyson lights come on but it won’t run. What’s wrong?

Power is reaching the battery but not the motor. A worn trigger or switch is the most common cause. It needs testing.

Is it the battery or the trigger?

If it won’t charge or shows no lights, suspect the battery. If it charges normally but won’t run, suspect the trigger. We test both as part of the service.

Can a blockage stop my Dyson turning on?

Usually not. A blockage makes it pulse or cut out. If it won’t start at all, the fault is electrical.

Is it worth repairing a Dyson that won’t turn on?

Often, yes. Batteries and triggers can be replaced. Our $95 service includes finding the fault, and we quote parts before fitting. How pricing works.
