Dyson not charging? Here’s what to check.

If the lights don’t come on, keep flashing, or the battery runs flat straight away, the fault is in the charger, the contacts or the battery. Rule out the simple ones first.

Tap a part

Why it won’t charge.

Most likely first. Tap a part on the drawing to jump to it.

The charger or the power point

A faulty power point, a damaged cable or a failed charger means no power reaches the battery.

Check: Try a different power point and check the cable and plug for damage.

Dirty or damaged charging contacts

Dust or a bent contact on the battery, the charger plug or the dock stops it charging properly.

Check: Unplug it and gently clean the contacts with a dry cloth.

A worn or faulty battery

Lithium-ion batteries wear with age. Flashing lights on many models point to a battery or charging fault.

Check: Leave it on charge for a few hours. If it still won’t hold charge, the battery needs testing.

It’s too hot or too cold

Dyson batteries won’t charge outside a set temperature range, for example straight after heavy use or in a cold garage.

Check: Let it cool down, then charge it indoors at room temperature.

Try this at home first.

Switch it off and take the battery off, or unplug the charger, before you open anything up.

Dyson charging questions.

Why is my Dyson flashing and not charging?

Flashing lights usually mean a charging or battery fault, or that the battery is too hot or cold to charge. Let it reach room temperature, clean the contacts and try again.

Can I use a different charger?

Use the correct Dyson charger for your model. The wrong charger may not charge it, and could damage the battery.

How do I know if it’s the charger or the battery?

If the charger light doesn’t come on at all, suspect the charger or the power point. If it charges but drains fast, it’s usually the battery. We test both.

Do you replace Dyson batteries?

Yes. We test and replace batteries for the V7 to V15. See Dyson battery replacement.

Is a swollen or hot battery dangerous?

Stop using and charging it straight away and keep it away from anything flammable. Book a service so we can check it safely.
